AlmunecarAlmunecar, an Andalusian town on the Costa Tropical

It is located just an hour from Malaga airport. In recent years sightseeing in Almunecar has been gaining momentum and a sleepy Andalusian town is turning into a serious resort.

The town's location is unique because the town is situated on the warmest continental coast in Europe. The Costa Tropical — the tropical coast — is the only place in Europe where natural conditions have enabled the cultivation of fruits such as mango, avocado, papaya and edible cactus fruits. The latter are called  'czumbo' by the locals. Almunecar is a place where tourism operates mainly during the summer season, which does not mean that it is cold outside the season. Almunecar is one of the warmest places on the continental map of Europe.

Beyond sunbathing, Almunecar also offers a wide range of places beloved by tourists. We will try to present a few of them.

San Miguel Castle

is a magnificent fortification built as far back as Phoenician times. Its history is turbulent because it passed from hand to hand and was also used by the Romans. The castle was renovated in the 18th century and ultimately serves as the museum of the town of Almunecar.

The Roman aqueduct in Almunecar

It is interesting that the Roman aqueducts are the oldest and best-preserved structures of this type in Spain. Originally the aqueducts served as water installations supplying the town with water. When the Romans built a fish salting factory, the creation of a new water installation became necessary. A very modern construction for its time also served as an installation that allowed irrigation of the fruits cultivated in Almunecar back then. Probably it was this advanced technology that caused the town to be famous for its wonderful fruits to this day.

Marine Aquarium

If you are nature enthusiasts or want to see the true flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea, it is worth visiting this place.  The aquarium houses many interesting species and over 1 million liters of water. In this beautiful place the real seabed of the Mediterranean has been recreated with attention to the smallest details of the ecosystem. In the aquarium you will find species such as  sharks, seahorses, jellyfish, turtles and others. The building consists of two floors. We definitely recommend it not only to adults but also to families with children. An unforgettable experience.
